A Journey to Deeper Self-Care:
Reevaluating My Relationship with Alcohol
On the 2nd of January 2024, my journey towards deeper self-love began. But to truly understand the significance of this moment, let me take you back in time for some context.
For years, I joked about being a "functional alcoholic." The irony was that I wasn't functioning well at all. Constant brain fog clouded my days, motivation was non-existent and I found myself using my health conditions—Hashimoto's and endometriosis—as excuses. I convinced myself that since these conditions were managed by other positive lifestyle choices, my alcohol consumption couldn't be that detrimental. But that was just self-deception.
In reality, I was consuming at least a bottle of wine every day, sometimes even two. The excuses I made for my drinking habits were as plentiful as they were varied. I rationalised that since my diseases were managed, surely my drinking couldn't be that harmful, right? Um… WRONG.
The truth was, things weren't happening in my life the way I desired, mainly because I wasn't putting in the effort. The combination of brain fog and lack of motivation kept me stagnant. And if I wasn't truly putting in the work, was I even really failing at all?
However, as the days passed, a deep knowing began to grow within me. Something had to change. Or rather, something had to be given up. Thus began my journey of reevaluating my relationship with alcohol.
I made it through 88 days without alcohol, before heading off on holidays with hubby. We visited South Australia and well, what happens in the Barossa stays in the Barossa. I will admit, I was concerned about our plan to enjoy a drink or two on holidays and my ability to drop it the moment we returned home. Hello my long lost friend, self doubt.
As it turns out, unlike previous attempts, this time feels different. Despite enjoying 2 glasses of wine at an event shortly after returning from holidays, I haven't struggled with cravings on a daily basis or had to talk myself off the ledge of using alcohol to cope with the highs and lows of life. Not now nor during the first 3 months of the year that I went without. It's been a liberating experience.
So, how am I feeling? Remarkable, for the most part. I've noticed significant shifts in my body—changes in my menstrual cycle and a reduction in inflammation. But perhaps most notably, my skin has undergone a transformation—it's glowing like never before.
Now, you might wonder why I'm sharing this personal journey. Simply put, I'm proud of myself and I believe someone out there might need to hear that they're not alone in their struggles. Especially in a society where socialising often revolves around alcohol, it's important to know that reevaluating our relationship with alcohol is a valid and empowering choice.
As I reflect on this journey, I can't predict what the future holds in terms of my relationship with alcohol. But what I do know is that I'm happy on this path of self-discovery and self-care.
Now, let's delve into the top 5 ways alcohol affects the skin:
Dehydration: Alcohol is a diuretic, meaning it increases urine production and dehydrates the body. Dehydrated skin appears dull, dry, and lacks elasticity, leading to premature aging.
Inflammation: Alcohol consumption triggers inflammation throughout the body, including the skin. This can exacerbate existing skin conditions such as acne, eczema, and rosacea.
Collagen depletion: Alcohol interferes with collagen production, the protein responsible for maintaining skin's firmness and elasticity. Reduced collagen levels contribute to sagging skin and the formation of wrinkles.
Poor sleep quality: While alcohol may initially induce drowsiness, it disrupts the sleep cycle, leading to poor sleep quality. Inadequate sleep inhibits the skin's ability to repair and regenerate, resulting in a tired and lackluster complexion.
Nutrient depletion: Alcohol interferes with the absorption of essential nutrients, including vitamins A, C, and E, which are crucial for skin health. Deficiencies in these nutrients can lead to dull, unhealthy-looking skin and impaired wound healing.
By understanding how alcohol impacts the skin, you can make informed choices that prioritise your skin health and overall well-being.
